Literary essay

In the class of Literature we read an interesting book called "The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", so we write an literary essay talking about the theme called " The rational and the Irrational". Here is my essay, i write it with my partner Francisco Cersosimo.

An essay on The Strange Case of
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

In “The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. Jekyll, a famous doctor, creates a potion which transforms Jekyll into his evil personality, Mr. Hyde. In the story the rational and the irrational is reflected. Jekyll think that with the potion his evil part is going to separate, but he transforms into his evil part. That is a bad thing, because Jekyll does not have control of what Mr. Hyde do. The rational and the irrational can compare the humans against the animals.

Dr. Jekyll is rational, because he know that the potion probably will not work as he wants, and that could be very dangerous. He wants to separate his two personalities, but he only transforms into Hyde. When this happens, he totally loses the control of Hyde. Hyde could kill people, but Jekyll does not do anything. “The Doctor returned with a smile. But the words were hardly uttered, before the smile was struck out of his face and succeeded by an expression of such abject terror and despair, as froze the blood of the two gentlemen below”

Hyde is irrational, because he knew that he was killing people, and he also know that killing people was bad.  Hyde´s mind is like of an animal, animals know that they kill other animals for food, but to survive. The difference is that Hyde kills people for fun. “And then all of a sudden he broke out in a great flame of anger, stamping with his foot, brandishing the cane and carrying on like a madman.”

Dr. Jekyll can stop drinking the potion, to stop this monster, to kill Mr Hyde. But he anyway keep drinking the potion knowing the consequences. Jekyll become addicted to the potion, he could not stop drinking. So Mr. Hyde continued killing people or hurting and Jekyll does not do anything about that. When, Dr. Jekyll, he loses totally the control of Hyde he commits suicide to stop this once and for all. “When this shall fall into your hands I shall have disappeared under what circumstances I have not the penetration to foresee; but my instincts  and all the circumstances of my nameless situation tell me that the end is sure and must be early.”

I think that the author want to explain many things, but one of the most important is that it does not matter how good you are, everyone have his evil personality. This make me realize that I have that evil personality and that maybe sometime I can transform into my evil part.
